We're All Whipping Boys and Girls These Days
Like being a whipping boy (or girl)? No? Well whether you like it or not, that's what you've become if you are a small-scale gold miner or have any real or intended interest (financial or otherwise) in mining as a hobby or as a business. In fact, we're all whipping boys and girls these days.
The drumbeat of the anti-mining forces aligned against us grows louder and more insistent with each passing day and about all we can do (or have done, I should say) is circle the wagons and wait for the next onslaught. Let's take a look at where these attacks are coming from:
- Mining reform advocates
- Environmental whack jobs and "green" weenies
- Wilderness legislation lobbyists
- State and Federal EPAs
- Endangered and protected species guardians
- Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the US Forest Service
- Special interest litigation against miners and mining operations
- General public
- Gutless, deep-pocketed politicians
A Bit of Slack
Still, I have to cut a bit of slack to two of these threats, the BLM and the general public. I know I may make myself unpopular by saying this but BLM reps have been of great service to myself and my co-claimants on recent issues with our North Yuba River claim. You know what? There are good and right-minded people everywhere...even in civil service.
What about John Q. Public? You can't blame the common man or woman if they've been turned against the great evil that mining seems to represent to the air, the climate, the bunnies, the trees, the fishies, and so on. The general public has been propagandized so frequently and so virulently by the media, left-wing agitators, and crazed environmental "true believers" that they might as well have just been released from a Stalinist "re-education" camp.
Greater Glory and Power
On the other end of the spectrum you have some US Forest Service personnel who seem to have assumed the role of the state's secret police and "enforcers." Their actions against small-scale gold miners in Northern California and Southern Oregon in recent years has been way out of line, to put it nicely.
Dickies Work Clothes
Next, my favorite people. Politicians. NOT!!! These self-serving hypocrites and cowards are adept at sniffing out which way the wind is blowing today and riding it to greater glory and power (oh...did I mention larger bank accounts too?). It's this latter factor however, that will ultimately work in our favor, my mining brothers and sisters.
How so? Strip away the power and strip away the glory and what does a politician love above all else? MONEY!! With gold at $1,600 a troy ounce and silver at $40, guess what? Eventually these slack-jawed pseudo-patricians and money grubbers will dump their leftist and environmentalist special interests in a heartbeat if they smell "mo' money" in mining.
Just you wait and see...
